A Health And Physical Education Instructor Instructs Her Students About The Relevance Of Alcohol Addiction Signs
Miss Jackson was a health instructor at the largest co-ed high school in the district. Even though she had been teaching for only one year, she had already acquired a reputation as an instructor with educational methods that motivated and stimulated the pupils in her class to think and to learn.
As an illustration, one Friday morning at 11:30 she addressed her students and announced the following: "For the next week we are going to learn about some typical alcoholism signs from a more wide-ranging viewpoint and we are also going to learn about a number of the most basic signs of alcoholism from a more detailed standpoint."
"Not every one of these alcoholism warning signs will categorically prove that someone with a drinking problem is an alcohol addicted individual, but the more signs that a drinker displays, the greater the probability that he or she is an alcohol dependent individual."
Miss Jackson then informed the members of the class that each student would be accountable for studying four alcohol dependence signs and then presenting his or her results to the class by way of a thirty minute oral presentation.
The day after all of the pupils completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a sheet of paper with a list of all the alcohol addiction signs that were presented and discussed in the presentations and in class. Miss Jackson then asked the students in her classroom to go over the list and rank the top five alcohol dependency signs that were most indicative of alcohol dependency. After about five minutes, Miss Jackson collected the pieces of paper and informed the students in her classroom that after she studies the numbers, she will present her findings the morning of the next school day.
Miss Jackson asked the students in her classroom to look over the data on the sheet of paper she passed out and then to raise their hand if they had any issues, questions, or concerns. Within 10 or 20 seconds, just about every student in the class raised her or his hand. It was noticeable that the pupils had some questions, concerns, or issues about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism professionals. As an illustration, just about every person in the class had an issue with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism experts, to be exact, "Do you feel unusually nauseous when you stop drinking?"
Miss Jackson then explained to the students in her classroom why this answer was the most accurate indicator of alcohol addiction. She pointed out that the foremost difference between alcohol dependency and alcohol abuse is the physical dependency that is experienced with alcoholism and not with alcohol abuse.
In effect this means that when an alcohol addicted individual all of a sudden stops drinking, she or he will experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the relevance of alcohol withdrawals in the life of the alcohol dependent individual, the students started to appreciate the major difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency.
A few minutes later the bell rang, signifying the end of the class. Based on the buzz exhibited by the pupils when they were leaving the room, Miss Jackson recognized that she had encouraged and inspired the pupils in her class to stop and think about an essential social problem and health issue that exists in our culture.
