Plastic Sofa Cover - Strong, Handy Clear! Antique Relic Or Forgotten Treasure?

In the 1950s through 1970s, upon the introduction of consumer-friendly plastics, some rich families protected their sofas and many other living room furniture with sturdy, flexible, clear plastic couch covers, permitting the often pale-colored damask textures and designs to show through in all their glory.

These plastic covers kept the furniture looking new, in spite of normal everyday use which could soil and permanently fade the upholstery, requiring expensive and often unsuccessful shampooing of the furniture. Pet accidents, playful children frolicking in directly from mud puddles, and fruit punch could easily destroy an irreplaceable expensive investment in an important showcase room, the cultural need to surprise neighbors, to wow business partners and customers during evening meals and compulsory follow-up socializing in the parlor, and to host other engagements of varying importance while demonstrating the family's status and prestige in the community.

Some families used plastic sofa covers on just their most stylish furniture, displayed in an official sitting room, generally used exclusively on special occasions or for special guests. The escape of a burgundy beverage from a wobbly goblet, dark fudge from a housewife's perfect bundt cake, or lipstick from an exuberant guest's misplaced greeting could be wiped off, leaving the furniture looking magically new quickly.

Another set of furniture was sometimes set up in a tucked-away family room or den, where parents and children could socialize more comfortably without worry. Because these dens were just for the household members to gather in, the discomfort of sitting on sweaty, sticky, crinkly plastic sofa covers was needless. Non-family members would never see any stains or spills on furniture in this secret chamber.

In the last several decades, the plastic couch cover has fallen out of favor, and is almost totally replaced by more comfortable fabric throws and fitted or semi-fitted fabric covers in nearly limitless colors and designs. With just a quick trip to the linen closet, a host or hostess could entirely make over a room in minutes.

Nowadays, very few homes boast old-fashioned plastic couch covers that most people have no idea that furniture stores and online websites still sell them today. But however lovely a fabric cover may be, it can never fight with the plastic sofa cover in permitting the true look of furniture to show through, while preventing liquid stains & odors from setting in!
