Recent teenage alcohol abuse statistics reveal that alcohol abuse among teenagers is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? Numerous alcohol addiction consultants state that wine, beer, and liquor advertisements generated by the media are a primary reason for the escalation of teen alcohol abuse.
Other alcohol abuse authorities state that the increase in youth alcohol abuse is due to the acceptability and accessibility of wine, beer, and liquor in our society. Still other substance abuse professionals declare that many of our adolescents involve themselves in injurious drinking because of the increased anxiety that they go through.
From a somewhat different perspective, since both parents in many families work full or part-time, the lack of parental guidance indubitably has to play a key part in the spread of teenage alcohol abuse. And finally, an assortment of alcohol abuse specialists believe that the escalation of teenage alcohol abuse is due, to some extent, to our lax society.
One facet of teen alcohol abuse that looks like it is lacking in the chemical dependency research findings, in contrast, is the absence of educational programs that teach teenagers how to upgrade their coping skills so that their careless drinking behavior is extensively reduced or exterminated. More to the point, scientific research has revealed that there is an indirect correlation between poor coping skills and hazardous and abusive drinking.
Basically, this means that the poorer the coping skills, the greater the incidence of alcohol abuse. To the degree that this is a valid affirmation, why isn't coping skills training an essential part of the academic curriculum in all of our elementary schools, junior high schools, and high schools?
Let us manufacture a scenario for illustrative purposes. Let us imagine a society in which all individuals are taught how to achieve excellent coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including the twelfth grade. In such a society, when life gets difficult, students who are "coping skills masters" will be able to respond in a more healthy and more productive way, contrary to others who fail to execute their coping skills.
More specifically, students who display first rate coping skills will be more able to think proactively and engage in top-shelf decision making as opposed to students who, because they were unsuccessful in their attempts to implement quality coping skills, resort to the "quick fix" of abusive and excessive drinking.
What would happen in the above "ideal" society, moreover, if teenagers not only received first-rate coping skills instruction but also received an extraordinary education that outlined the long term and short term destructive results associated with drug abuse and alcohol abuse? Such an emphasis on teenage alcohol and drug abuse facts, along with more advanced coping skills instruction, it is asserted, would help adolescents stay away from the noticeable charm correlated with teenage drinking and, consequently, would substantially reduce the dangerous drinking behavior exhibited by the youth in our country.
There are obviously scores of compelling reasons why so many of our teenagers drink in a hazardous manner. Such a complicated issue demands a wide-ranging and relevant response by our politicians, parents, educators, and students so that our adolescents can learn how to cope with life's predicaments in a more productive and responsible way rather than resorting to unhealthy and excessive drinking to solve their problems.
