Turkey Fryer

Thanksgiving wouldn't be Thanksgiving without a turkey. I like turkey just as much as the next person, however sometimes the Thanksgiving turkey can get a little boring. In my family, we prefer to mix things up just a little bit. Heck sometimes we'll even miss the turkey in favor of something a little less traditional like ribs or prime rib. But for people who desire the traditional Thanksgiving Turkey there are lots of methods to prepare a turkey (including smoking your turkey, cooking your turkey in a turkey fryer, etc.). Here are five different ways to prepare turkey which are a little different than the norm, however just as tasty.

Roasted Turkey - First, I just have to include Grandma's favourite roasted turkey. Of course, what would Thanksgiving be without Grandma's roasted turkey and home made mashed potatoes? This roasted turkey is the simplest turkey recipe you'll find. Basically, you remove the giblets and clean the turkey in cold water. Pat the turkey dry and then insert 3 Tbsp of butter under the skin. Prepare a soup made of water, chicken bouillon, onion powder, parsley, salt and pepper. Pour the broth directly over the turkey, cover with foil and cook for 3 1/2 hours at 350. Remove the aluminum foil and cook for 45 minutes more for a golden brown skin. Serve with homemade mashed potatoes, gravy, as well as your favorite Thanksgiving dishes!

Barbecue Turkey - We love to grill and grill all year long, whatever the weather. We place everything else on the grill, why not a turkey too? Grilling a turkey gives it a unique taste and texture that you just can't get from an oven. When barbecuing a turkey, place the turkey in a baking pan over the flames; this way you can actually baste the turkey regularly just like you would do if you were roasting it.

Fried Turkey - People who love crisp turkey skin will LOVE deep fried turkeys. A deep fried turkey is delicious and using a turkey fryer to cook turkeys is becoming more and more popular, particularly since the turkey fryer is becoming a common kitchen appliance. While most turkey fryers are deep fryers where you use peanut oil in a huge frying pot, there are also oil-less infrared turkey fryers too, which eliminate a lot of the mess of frying. Fried turkeys tend to have dark crisp skin (which my family quarrels over!), and underneath that tasty skin is soft, perfectly cooked meat that your family will love.

Turducken - This strange sounding turkey is a mix of various de-boned fowl: turkey, duck, and chicken. They are all put together and layered with filling to create this newest addition to the Thanksgiving table.

Smoked Turkey - One of my favorite ways of preparing turkey is smoking it. I simply love the flavor of a smoked turkey, both at Thanksgiving dinner as well as for those wonderful leftover turkey sandwiches. Smoking a turkey takes several hours, but it is soooo worth it! One tip when smoking a turkey - placing a pan of water over the smoker helps hold in moisture and create a moist, juicy turkey that everyone will enjoy.

How will you cook your Thanksgiving Turkey this year? At our house we will be using our new masterbuilt electric turkey fryer. My husband and his sister fight over the crispy skin, which is always fun to watch :) I really hope you found some new and tasty ways to cook your turkey this holiday. Happy Thanksgiving!
